A seminar on green hydrogen was held

With the support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) workshop called "Green hydrogen - a path to decarbonization" was held by the Azerbaijan Renewable Energy Agency (AREA) under the Ministry of Energy.

At the event, which brought together state institutions, researchers, investors, and other interested parties that could contribute to the development of green energy projects, issues such as energy transition scenarios for Azerbaijan, the potential of green hydrogen production for domestic use and export, as well as the investment environment in the relevant field were discussed. Javid Abdullayev, Director of AREA gave a welcome speech at the seminar organized in a hybrid format, said that according to the decree signed by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Mr. Ilham Aliyev in 2021, becoming a country of green growth with a clean environment was accepted as a national priority in Azerbaijan. It was noted that political will regarding green energy, vast renewable energy potential, and reliable partnership environment allow our country to become a supplier of renewable energy, including green hydrogen.

The event continued with 4 sessions after the speeches of AREA director Javid Abdullayev and JICA country program coordinator Nigar Ismayilova.
In the first session called "Hydrogen as the enabler to clean energy transition", speeches of representatives of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, Ministry of Economy, Ministry of Digital Development and Transport as well as Azerbaijan Renewable Energy Agency were heard.

The representatives of State Oil Company (SOCAR), bp, Masdar, ACWA Power, Fortescue Future Industries and Siemens Energy spoke at the second session dedicated to the production and application of green hydrogen in Azerbaijan. In the speeches, the work done in the direction of green energy in our country and the planned projects, as well as the prospects for the production of green hydrogen were discussed.

Representatives of Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Ministry of the Environment, Fund for the Joint Credit and Mitsui & Co. gave information on the possibilities of joint credit mechanisms for low-carbon projects, financial support and other issues in the third session entitled "Sustainable solutions: from exploration to implementation". In the same session, the representative of AREA informed the participants about the energy overview of our country, and the representative of the Oil and Gas Institute of the Ministry of Science and Education informed the participants about the decarbonization projects of the institute.

In the last session, "Green investment schemes: options and issues", where the representatives of the Ministry of Economy, the Central Bank, and Azerbaijan Technical University spoke about financing issues discussed in the direction of the development of the use of renewable energy in Azerbaijan.

The Ministry of Energy, Azerbaijan Energy Regulatory Agency (AERA), Institute of Radiation Problems of the Ministry of Science and Education, and representatives of Azerbaijan Oil Industry magazine also participated in the seminar.
